Manholes are underground chambers built to provide man- entry access for service and maintenance of sewer and drain lines, water valves, metering equipment, etc. They are subject to erosion from ground water intrusion, corrosion from liquids and gases, wear from dynamic traffic loads and general deterioration from age.

With the advent of effective pipe repair technologies, the defects and problems in manholes are receiving increased attention. The leaks that are sealed during the pipelining process are redirected to the next weakest part of the infrastructure, which is usually the manhole.
